Southern Ocean Lodge, an iconic luxury retreat on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, has been reborn as “Southern Ocean Lodge 2.0” following its destruction in the devastating bushfires of January 2020. The lodge reopened in December 2023, nearly four years after the fires, marking a significant milestone in the island’s recovery.
The reconstruction, led by Baillie Lodges in collaboration with Kangaroo Island-born architect Max Pritchard and his team, aimed to preserve the essence of the original lodge while incorporating enhancements and new features. The design maintains the lodge’s signature curved lines that hug the sea, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the dramatic coastal landscape.
